The global pharmaceutical company Pfizer has received an endorsement from the U. S. Food and Drug Administration that it will not sell its Viagra medicine to the public, according to an order.
The approval follows an earlier decision by the FDA that the drug, which treats erectile dysfunction, should be pulled from the market.
The FDA's approval was based on a review of more than 5,000 patients who had tried Viagra or Cialis and experienced side effects from the two drugs. In the study, which showed an overall safety profile similar to those of the older versions, the drug was the drug's best-selling drug. Pfizer said the drug "appears to be safe and effective in many patients" in clinical trials.
The company said it was "reviewing the evidence" and had "considers" to recommend that it withdraw the drug.
"Pfizer's decision to withdraw Pfizer's Viagra is not based on the safety and efficacy data presented in this Pfizer-sponsored study," the company said in the FDA approval.
The FDA also said it was "reviewing the available clinical data and determining whether Pfizer's Viagra should be withdrawn from the market because of safety and efficacy concerns," the company said.
The company said that although Pfizer's Viagra, Cialis, and other erectile dysfunction drugs had a "large number" of patients who reported side effects from them, the company "will continue to follow the safety and efficacy data from our own Phase 3 studies of Viagra and Cialis."
The company did not immediately respond to an order for comment on the withdrawal of Pfizer's Viagra.
A Pfizer spokesman did not return an email request for comment.
