The drug maker Pfizer is offering to sell a generic version of its erectile dysfunction treatment Viagra on the US market without a prescription for $3.49 a pill. It is expected to start selling its version of Viagra in about a week after Pfizer reported that it had reached an agreement with the U. S. drugmaker to sell the drug in Canada. Viagra, known generically as sildenafil, is the brand name for tadalafil, the active ingredient in Cialis, the first drug approved for erectile dysfunction, and is sold by many Pfizer drug makers to treat erectile dysfunction.
Viagra has been available in the US since 1998, when Pfizer Inc. filed a patent for the drug for its ability to treat erectile dysfunction and promote overall sexual health. It is the first US drug to do so, although Viagra can be purchased in Canada for $3.49 a pill. In its first week of sale, Viagra will offer customers up to 30 tablets of sildenafil with a maximum daily dose of 20 milligrams.
The company will begin selling the generic version of Viagra in Canada on June 18. Pfizer also announced the launch of a rival drug called tadalafil-based Revatio, which combines the active ingredient tadalafil with a generic drug, avanafil. This drug is the first approved to treat erectile dysfunction.
Tadalafil has been available for several months in the US since 1998. It has been approved for use in the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension and is also approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, a condition that affects men of all ages. A Boots spokesperson said that the man affected by erectile dysfunction should buy the drug themselves wherever practically possible.
Men with severe heart problems, those at high risk of heart problems, liver failure, kidney failure, strokes or those taking certain other medicines, will still need to be prescribed the drug under the supervision of a doctor.
A four-pack of the tablets will cost £19.99 and an eight-pack £34.99.
Men who buy it will be advised that they can take a 50 mg tablet an hour before having sex, but should not use more than one pill a day.
Viagra is is already available as an NHS prescription free of charge for those eligible not to pay for their prescriptions.

“Our hope is that the availability of Viagra Connect in pharmacies will encourage men who do nothing about their erectile dysfunction to seek help, and encourage those who are inclined to seek help to do so sooner.”
